Industrial paper production <\/div>

Industrial paper production in Balsthal began in 1883 when Robert and Arthur Bareiss founded the limited partnership Papier- und Couvertfabrik Balsthal and installed the first paper machine a year later. However, the company's roots go back even further: to a medieval grain mill and a wood grinding shop. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A second paper machine with a smoothing cylinder is put into operation. This makes it possible to produce smooth paper on one side for toilet paper booklets and rolls as well as envelopes - a pioneering achievement. Until then, such products had to be imported from abroad. Within a short space of time, the factory produces a wide range of products, including exercise book covers and sugar cane paper. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Construction of a second factory in Niederbipp. In 1966, raw paper from Balsthal can be processed at the new site for the first time. In addition, Switzerland's first industrial waste water purification plant is put into operation. Three years later, Tissue Machine 1 starts up, producing the finest crepe tissue paper with advanced technology, high speed and precision. For the first time in the world, the paper machine water cycle is completely closed.
